Promotion of Science and Technology

Bilbao Ekintza develops a strategy to promote the culture of the disciplines known as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), in order to make people aware of their importance and to encourage young people to train in these areas.

Among their main goals, the European Union establishes the promotion of the scientific and technological vocations required by the labour market. Europe is expected to need more scientists and technologists in the short term, and there will not be enough qualified personnel to fill these jobs.

A number of studies indicate that one of the reasons for today's low rates of enrolment in science degrees is linked to the perception of science held by the general public.

In this context, Bilbao has developed the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) strategy, which seeks to promote values linked to science, technology and innovation among young people. It also aims to boost the scientific culture of society by generating links between the education system, the scientific community, families and society in general, with the aim of offering a more realistic image of science and technology.

As part of the STEM Bilbao Strategy, we highlight some of our own projects such as Bizilabe, or those developed by other organisations and supported by Bilbao Ekintza, such as:

  • Zientzia Azoka: This initiative is promoted by Elhuyar Fundazioa for young people aged between 12 and 18 years old to develop scientific and/or technological projects in their schools. The results of this work are exhibited at the Fair.
  • Fórmula Student and Moto Student: These are important projects for the design and construction of a single-seater and a motorbike which compete in the events."Formula Student and Moto Student at international level, directed by the Higher Technical School of Engineering of Bilbao. Students from the faculty take part, and the aim is to offer them practical experience adjacent to the world of engineering and the business which complements their training and facilitates their employability.
  • Bisky Team: This project is also developed by students from the Higher Technical School of Engineering of Bilbao, and focusses on the design, construction and testing of hybrid rockets. The objective is to design a rocket that reaches the Karman line, the boundary between the atmosphere and outer space, at an altitude of 100 km.
  • Homo Curiosus Odisea: This event focusses on the scientific and technological culture and its dissemination in Bilbao. The aim is to bring the general public closer to the world of science and technology by means of talks, workshops and activities, thereby contributing to the development of the STEM strategy in the city.
